Garage48 for Public Services, February 2011 in Tallinn
December 20, 2010
Garage48 for Public Services aims to build new or better web and mobile services for public use. While organizing the previous two Garage48 events Estonia, we have noticed that in addition to pure business-oriented projects, participants have also proposed ideas that do not intend to make money, but would be useful to the society.
In Garage48 Tallinn in April, one project was Prügikast, which provided information on the location of the nearest recycling facility to get rid of glass, electronics, paper, etc. Another such project was poliitik.eu, which provided beautifully formatted graphs on the attendance and voting patterns of the members of Estonian parliament. We invite 70 motivated programmers, designers, project managers, NGO volunteers, public servants and public sector enthusiasts together to a Garage48 for Public Services weekend. Like any other Garage48, we get together on Friday evening to select the best ideas and form the teams. We will work hard over the weekend, and by Sunday evening, teams will be ready to showcase their cool and new services with live demo.
Garage48 for Public Services will be organized by Garage48 Foundation and it will take place in February 2011 (either 18-20 or 25-27) at Tallinn University. The event is sponsored by Open Estonia Foundation. The idea selection process of Public Services Garage is a little different from that of the regular Garage48 events, though. As some ideas depend on the access of the right government data, we aim to gather all the ideas together before the event, so we can work with the public sector on making the necessary data and API-s available. Example of possible ideas:- Online graphics / visual presentation of government budget (and how money is spent and coming in)
- Mobile app that tells you which roads are currently cleaned from snow
- Mobile app with online information about changes in transportation (for example if you Jõgeva-Tartu bus is late for 10 minutes)
- Mobile app for small village to help local elderly people
If you have any ideas for a new or improved public service (that can be made happen over the weekend), let us know! The registration to Garage48 for Public Services will start in January, please follow us on Facebook or Twitter to get notified.
See you in February,
Elise Sass
