Garage48: T minus 48 hours and counting

For the first time in its existence, the Garage48 concept is coming to Helsinki. It will take place on January 14 to 16, 2010 at the Aalto Venture Garage. Originally developed in Estonia, the event’s purpose is building products in a single weekend. The motto is “Less talk, more action”.  It’s about taking an idea to a product in 48 hours.

Time is minus 48 hours
When getting to the Garage, you barely have time to take off your coat when you are bombarded with ideas. The juices are flowing – the people are talking, there is definitely buzz in the air, the Garage48 is about to officially start. Friday evening is about presenting ideas that will be worked on during the weekend.


T minus 46 hours
Teams are organized in an ad-hoc manner. Most of the teams are derived organically. You’ll find various skill-sets and roles in a team. Here’s what the Garage48 is typically looking for:

  • Visionary entrepreneurs and project managers - people with ability to start new business ideas, run teams and deliver
  • Designers - mavericks creating visual identity and user interfaces
  • Web Developers – HTML/CSS/AJAX/JS wizards making the design work smoothly in all web browsers
  • Programmers – planning technical architecture, writing functional code and testing the outcome
  • Mobile Developers – building apps for mobile platforms
  • Marketing and Business Development – evangelists and sales wizards making the products fly and reach the audience

T minus 40 hours
The teams is off to a good start! It’s time to think/design/innovate/develop.

T minus 32 hours
It’s all about pivoting real fast. There is no time for mistakes when the products need to be done in one weekend.

T – 23 hours
Is it day or night?  In the dark Finnish winters, you can’t tell much of the difference…but who cares! you have less than a day to finish, so you eat on the fly and take quick naps. There is no time to fool around.

T-10 hours
Push the pedal to the medal! There so much to do before the big reveal! All teams will start to practise their pitch, some of ideas is already running first public beetas.

T-2 hours
The product demos start at 6pm Sunday evening. You showcase what you have built and you get to see the products of the other teams. Please invite all your “friends and family” to attend this event, so they can see what are you and your team capable of. Demo event is free for everyone to participate.

T minus Zero
Time’s Up! The winner is announced. The Garage48 is officially over. After a weekend full of surprises, hard-work and fun, you leave the Garage knowing that you have developed a working product in 48 hours and met many new friends from Nordic-Baltic countries.

You  never know – maybe you just started to develop your zillion dollars startup.
