Get ready for "Public Services" weekend!
This information is must-read for Garage48 Public Service registered participants.
Garage48 will start on
Friday, 25. February 5:30pm in Tallinn. The venue is located at Uus-Sadama 5, Tallinn (see
Google Maps) and hosted by
Conference Centre,
Tallinn University. Please come on time, as the registration process might take some time.
Shortly the weekend will look like this:
- Presenting the ideas
- Choosing the best ideas for implementing
- Forming teams
- Dividing team roles and planning the work for the weekend
- Development, design, work and more work.
- Preparation for final pitch on Sunday
PRESENTING IDEAS
- Every participant can propose ideas, one can even propose several ideas. Better if you have discussed your idea before at Facebook Garage48 Public Services Ideas group.
- Ideas are presented based on"elevator-pitch" method within 90 seconds. Event host and audience can ask 1-3 ashort questions and the idea will be listed on the wall.
- Please think of the following key questions during your idea presentation (suggested time in seconds)
- Describe your background
- Describe the problem you want to solve
- Describe your idea how you solve the problem
- Solution - technical details, how it reaches target group.
- Which skills are needed - if you already have some team members, briefly say who you have and who you need as much as you can think of.
- Practice your pitch before in front of a mirror, friends and family. 90 seconds is a really short time.
- You can prepare 1 (one) pdf slide to support your pitch. If you wish to show a slide, then please send it to Garage48 team by Friday morning (25. February) at 10 am by email elise@garage48.org and info@garage48.org.
- There will be many ideas. if you want to present yours, then pre-register. We will start with the ideas presented at Facebook Garage48 public Services Ideas group and continue with those sent to our emails elise@garage.org
- Some ideas for Garage48 Public Services will be pre chosen and will definitely be developed during the weekend.
- After pitching participants will chose the ideas they want to support and join teams
- There will be at least 10 teams working with the chosen ideas.
IMPLEMENTING THE CHOSEN IDEAS
- Each team will chose a room/spot/corner at Tallinn University building to start their work.
- Divide roles
- Set the product vision
- Plan what can be done within 48 hours
- Start working asap
- Set up servers, hosting - HAvirtual will be helping with this.
- On Friday and Saturday evenings Tallinn University building is open for us until 23.00. After that you can continue to work at Garage48 HUB (all night long) or at any team members' home, office or even in a pub ;) If you want continue working in Garage48 HUB, please catch Elise during the day.
- Tallinn University building is opened on Saturday and Sunday from 8.00 am.
- Wear your name badge at all times during the event, this will help networking. Be open-minded, get to know people, share your ideas, say if you have anything to say, give feedback, listen what others suggest. Enjoy and have fun!
- Wireless internet access is provided by Tallinn University who sets up a special network for Garage48 Public Services weekend
FOOD AND ACCOMMODATION
- Breakfast, Lunch and dinner will be provided
- Breakfast - sandwiches, muesli, yoghurt, fruit
- Lunch - soup, buns
- Dinner on Saturday - warm dinner
- Snacks - there will be snacks (biscuits, fruits, soft drinks, coffee, tea, water) between scheduled meal times. We still suggest to eat at the scheduled times, it will keep you going.
- Coffee, water, tea and soft drinks will be provided at all times from Garage48 team base.
- SUGGESTION - if you want special food, please takeit with you. We do have something for vegetarians but not for vegans specially.
- ENERGY DRINK - we do provide coffe and coca cola, but if you want special energy drinks, take some with you.
- Accommodation we do not provide and you can't stay in Tallinn University building for the night. If you do not have a place to stay, please shout it out at Garage48 Facebook page, we are sure we or someone can help you.
MENTORS, GUESTS, SPEAKERS AND MEDIA
- We will have 2 great speakers from UK My Society and Rewired State speaking at the main hall at 4.p.m Saturday evening.
- Mentors will be walking around on Saturday and Sunday helping you to keep on track and ask for any additional questions you might need
- There will be some photographers and guys with cameras and journalists walking around during the event. So keep smiling and working.
FINAL PITCH - PROJECT DEMOS
- Deadline for project is Sunday at 5.30 pm - be sure your demo works
- Final pitch starts at 6.p, Sunday 27. February
- You will have 3 minutes for product demonstration
- Concentrate on what you have achieved during the weekend
- Only short introduction on the project is needed
- Most important is the product itself
- Jury will chose the projects that have shown best results during the weekend
- We might also point out some special ones ;)
WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU?
- Computer and everything it needs
- Technical tools - everything else that you might need for extreme programming and fast development. (pen, paper, credit cards for domain registratin, mobile phone, chargers, 3-5 m power extension cords) etc
- Special food - we will provide food, but if you know that you might have extra needs, please take it with you
- A must is:
- Positive attitude and lots of energy
- Camera, to take and share photos and short clips
- Your business cards
SET UP DEVELOPMENT TOOLS
To save your time during the event, we suggest to setup minimum set of development tools. Below is the list of recommended development tools that are useful, easy to setup and get started. Suggestions by

- If you need code repository, use Subversion or Git for that. We suggest http://codesion.com (Free for first 30 days) or http://github.com (free fr open source) for easy to setup hosting options.
- Wunderlist - http://www.6wunderkinder.com/wunderlist may help you with your taks tracking and sharing. It's free and works both in Windows and Mac.
